Sam Mitchell (Federal Records, Merritone, Mitchies Records, The Gospel Trail) on the mic, providing historical and social context, and Michael Turner (Roots Knotty Roots) selecting tunes at Treasure Isle Special, a tribute night to legendary producer Duke Reid. (Sorry for the short clips…I wish I could have recorded the entire event!)
Photos from an absolutely fantastic performance by Big Youth. He created such energy and conscious vibes. The band, featuring original Soul Syndicate members Fully Fullwood on bass, Tony Chin on guitar (and vocals), Keith Sterling (keyboards) as well as Karl Wright on drums and a youthful horn section, were beyond tight. Their opening set got the dance floor moving; their backing of Big Youth solidly in the groove. Fully Fullwood brings live music to Don the Beach Comber in Huntington Beach every Sunday, with legendary Jamaican artists frequently stopping in for special events. The cover charge helps support Reggae for a Reason, Fullwood’s non-profit organization that he created to help homeless and disadvantaged youth. This weekly event is all-ages with a family-friendly atmosphere.
David Orlando, otherwise known as music aficionado and DJ extraordinaire Boss Harmony, has revived his night of vintage international selections: Bamboo. After several years on hiatus, Orlando’s DJ night – featuring Jamaican, Latin, and African selections – has returned. Bamboo’s new location at Cha Cha Lounge in Silver Lake, with its mid-century Mexican aesthetics, is ideally suited for the night. Come listen to the atmospheric soundscape he creates at Bamboo every last Thursday of the month. Free, 21+, 10pm-2am, 2375 Glendale Blvd., Los Angeles.
